Introduction

Does your skin appear to be shiny all the time? When you dab your hands on your nose or cheeks, do they leave a glistening sheen on your fingers, the first thing in the morning? If yes, then that’s a sign that your skin is oily or oily-prone. Your skin needs natural lubrication and moisture for day-to-day functioning and excess of that leads to enlarged pores, blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. In this blog, we’re going decode as to what causes oily skin and the best oily skin care routine or minimize it.

What causes oily skin?

The skin consists of sebaceous glands that produce and secrete sebum – a group of complex oils including waxy lipids, fatty acids, triglycerides and cholesterol. When this process goes smoothly, it helps your body to get rid of surface dead cells and other environmental pollutants from the pores. But if sebum is produced in excess or if the sebaceous glands overwork, one ends up with greasy skin and clogged pores.

  • Imbalance of the Doshas: Ayurveda states that all of our three Doshas or Tridoshas — Kapha, Vata and Pitta — have to work harmoniously, along with a balanced and healthy lifestyle to increase and protect our Ojas, also known as the “Vigour of Life”. The imbalance of Kapha and Pitta Doshas in one’s body can cause oily skin.
  • Improper Diet: Consumption of hot, spicy, fried and greasy food can cause an imbalance of Pitta and Kapha Doshas – thereby, causing acne and incessant breakouts.
  • Age: According to Ayurveda, a person’s childhood is primarily ruled by the Kapha Dosha until they hit puberty. Howsoever, once they hit adolescence, the Pitta Dosha takes over the reins until the person reaches the age of 50 years. And Vata, finally, starts from the age of 50. Thus puberty is the phase of transition from Kapha to Pitta, during which, you formulate acne and breakouts.
  • Geographical Climate: Not just food, age and what you eat but also where you live and what time of the year it is, can affect your bodily Doshas. Ayurveda states that during the summer season, the Kapha-Pitta levels in your body are aggravated that cause acne and oilier skin.

Steps to get rid of Oily Skin?

  1. Cleanse right: While the first and foremost step of your skincare regimen involves cleansing your face thoroughly, bear in mind that it’s very important that you don’t overdo it. Excessive and vigorous cleansing leads to micro-skin abrasion, an increase in oil production by the sebaceous glands, and an overall increase in the oiliness of the face. It is also important to bear in mind that you should avoid harsh cleansers with Sulphates and Parabens as these tend to dry out skin faster – leading to excessive breakouts and oiliness.
  2. Tone the skin: Our body — and our skin — consists of approximately 70% water and therefore using a hydrating toner to keep the hydration level intact and balanced is an absolute must. Not only do toners refresh and revive the skin, but they also improve elasticity and are harmonious to the senses and key to oily skin.
  3. Moisturize: There is a misconception that using any skincare products prepared with Ghee or Clarified Butter and oils would lead to more acne and incessant breakouts – thereby, causing an excessive amount of oil production visible on the face. Instead, our skin does need a certain level of nourishment in order to avoid the skin to compensate for it by producing more and more oil.

Natural ingredients suitable for Oily Skin:

Honey: One of nature’s most revered and loved products, Honey is the perfect humectant for oily and acne-prone skin. Think of it like a magnet, which attracts and seals moisture from the air into the upper layer of the skin! Turbocharged with antibacterial and antiseptic properties, it effectively helps get rid of pimples. It also has the ability to suck out the excess moisture from the overtly-clogged pores and dehydrate the acne-causing bacteria.

Manjishta: An Ayurvedic herb that has a bright red hue, symbolic of its blood purifying and detoxifying benefits, Manjistha is the perfect herb used to treat hormonal acne, cystic acne, and post-acne scars. Having a sweet, bitter and astringent-esque taste, also helps in maintaining healthy, oil-free skin without any inflammation.

Orange Peel Powder: Obtained from the fresh fruit pulp of orange fruit, Orange Peel Powder gives a complete dose of Vitamin C, along with necessary nutrients and fibre. It contains Citric Acid that helps brighten skin, giving it a natural glow. The powder can also be combined with other ingredients and used as a face masque, a face exfoliator and a face cleanser.

Neem: Believed to denote ‘good health’, as per Ayurveda, the Neem tree’s seeds, leaves and bark are used for their medicinal and beauty properties. The vitamins and fatty acids in Neem maintain and improve the elasticity of the skin, reduce wrinkles and fine lines. A powerful herb, it acts as a natural cleanser to purify and brighten the skin from deep within.

Step 1: Cleanse to purify

The secret to proper cleansing is to remove dead cells and toxins, without stripping the skin’s natural oils. The Forest Essentials Kashmiri Saffron and Neem Facial Cleanser is an ideal and delicate alternative to harsher cleansers that contain parabens and other chemicals. Especially designed to treat acne-prone and oily skin, this Ayurvedic facial cleanser is infused with the essential oils of Saffron, Neem and Kewda that deeply cleanse the skin, while leaving it glowing and balanced with each use.

Directions for usage: Use a tiny amount of your facial cleanser to cover the whole face. This means applying one pump or a capful of your cleanser with your fingertips for optimum coverage. Twice a day is recommended for best results.

Step 2: Masque to detoxify

A naturally-derived washable masque helps to detoxify and clarify the skin of any residual dirt that may not have cleared out with just a cleanser. At Forest Essentials, we recommend using Ubtans — an age-old Ayurvedic version of a masque, consisting of hand-ground herbs, dry-fruits and botanicals, made into powdered form — to achieve clear and radiant skin. The Multani Mitti Facial Ubtan is a gentle exfoliating treatment that purifies and deeply cleanses the skin with a fresh blend of sun-dried and hand-pounded herbs like Turmeric, Neem, Fenugreek and Multani Mitti (Fuller’s Earth).

The Forest Essentials Shudhi Skin Clarifying Facial Spray is a transformative, dermo-purifying formula — blended with a special mix of superior Ayurvedic herbs like Neem, Tulsi, Turmeric and Clove Oil —  that helps reduce acne, tightens pores, and alleviates inflammation for blemish-free and clear skin.
