In today’s day and age, the fragrance marketplace is flooded with fragrances that are made from synthetic, aromatic ingredients. These fragrances may be strong and proclaim to be long lasting, however they are often made from a base of petrochemicals, harmful for your skin and health in the long run.
Many of the fragrant substances including Saffron, Musk, Sandalwood and Camphor have become expensive to source. Ancient perfumers in India knew how to distill exquisite, fresh flowers into pure essences, which although were breathtaking to the senses, are now considered elaborate and expensive in their making. Therefore, naturally scented oil massages, and scented baths that have been so inherent to Indian culture, have often been replaced by artificial and hazardous perfumes.
In our mission to revive the Clean Beauty Ayurvedic philosophy, we scoured the ancient era of Ayurveda and its natural processes as well as recipes of perfume making, to prepare our collection of Single Flower Perfumes.
One traditional process involved in making the delicate fragrances is “Sandhaan Kalpana”. With the help of Sandhaan Kalpana we derive Pure Grain Alcohol.
Are their any risks in using pure grain alcohol?
“Sandhaan Kalpana” is also known as Biomedical Fermentation. It has been described in important and eminent Ayurvedic texts like the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Ashtang Hridayam as a method to obtain the active extracts of plants, while keeping these aqueous as well as alcohol soluble. This alcohol is safe to use on the skin as it is derived from plants.
Is grain alcohol the same as rubbing alcohol?
During this process of Sandhan Kalpana, the pure grain alcohol which is generated is mainly ethyl alcohol, obtained from natural grains including Rice, Barley, Jowar, Bajra and Wheat. Our Pure Grain Alcohol is pure Ethyl Alcohol with no other additives or denaturation, that’s what makes it different from synthetic or rubbing alcohol. This is the reason why Pure Grain Alcohol does not cause any irritation on skin and does not evaporate as quickly.
Pure Grain Alcohol Preparation Process
There are some very important factors that need to be taken into consideration during the process of Sandhaan kalpana to obtain Pure Grain Alcohol. This meticulous preparation makes this a rare ingredient used in today’s day and age:
1. The proportion of grains (Madhur Dravya) needs to be strictly followed as prescribed by the Vedic scriptures.
2. Container- All classical texts recommend the use of earthen and wooden containers for the fermentation process.
3. The right temperature and precise duration for the entire process to take place.
Ayurveda suggests some benefits of pure grain alcohol derived from Sandhaan Kalpana:
Some of the benefits of fermented herbal products like pure grain alcohol made by Sandhaan kalpana (biomedical fermentation) are mentioned below.
a). Fermentation removes the undesirable sugars from the plant material used to make Pure Grain Alcohol, making the ingredient and product at hand more skin friendly.
b). Fermentation extracts a wider range of active ingredients from the source than any other extraction method.
c).Fermentation removes any potential contaminants and lowers the harmful effects (if any) of some of the components of plants.
