Spring or Vasant Ritu is regarded as the season of warmth, moisture, and a tangible softness. Vasant Ritu embodies the heaviness of increased moisture, and it is also revered for its cultivating presence.
As per the ancient science of Ayurveda, these are a few characteristics that align spring with Kapha Dosha. Ayurveda explains that like increases like, so by its very nature, spring time tends to increase Kapha Dosha in the body.
Just as spring melts the persistent ice and snow, the season also liquefies accumulated Kapha so that it can be eliminated from the body. This process is revitalizing and detoxifying for the body, but for some, it triggers a number of health concerns.
Routine Changes to Balance your Health & Dosha during Vasant Ritu
An Ayurvedic seasonal routine is actually one of the best tools for minimizing spring’s Kapha-aggravating potential while supporting the elimination of any accumulated excess.
Here are some Ayurvedic recommendations for the right diet, exercise, and lifestyle modifications.
Exercise and lifestyle modifications:
To avoid Kapha aggravation, Ayurveda recommends regular exercise and to avoid sleeping in the daytime.
- Exercise has the advantage of giving a jump-start to the immune system, and it also helps to reduce infections. With exercise, the number of immune cells increase. Also, exercise is an antidote to excess Kapha in the body.
- Oil massage and dry massage should be done regularly. Massage your body with Chandan, Kesar, Agaru.
- Herbal bath with herbs or essential oils like Rose and Sandalwood, which have a cooling effect on the mind and body, are recommended. Weekly Neem water bath is also beneficial during this season.
Diet:
Spring or Vasant ritu is the ideal time to focus on our body’s health, so focus on eating light, Kapha balancing, bitter and astringent foods, and avoid cold, viscous, heavy, sour, and sweet dishes.
It is advised to eat easily digestible foods that are low in calories and detoxifying in nature.
Foods that are recommended in spring include:
- The ideal Vasant Ritu diet includes gut-healthy cereals like Barley, Ragi, and Oats, and gently stimulating spices like Coriander, Cumin, Turmeric, and F
- Avoid dairy products, heavy foods, and oily foods. Include Honey in your diet which helps in removing the excess Kapha from the body. Drink warm water with half a teaspoon of honey and a pinch of black pepper.
- Vegetables with a basic astringent quality like Spinach, Leafy Vegetables, Karela, Methi, etc are advised. Light dals like Red Gram and Green Gram are suitable.
- Other recommended foods include Garlic, Ginger that keep you away from cold and cough; Carrots, Radishes, Onions, etc.
- Spring is also the perfect time for a detox or cleanse. Juice fasts with fruit juices, vegetable juices and mono-diets are great during this transitional weather.
Yoga
Yoga postures benefit the immune system by increasing the circulation of blood cells, decreasing stress hormones, and stimulating the lymphatic system.
- During spring, certain poses to aid digestion can be adopted. Trikonasana (Triangle pose), Paschimottanasana (Forward bending pose), Pavanamuktasana, Matsyendrasana, and Ushtrasana (Camel pose) can be practiced on alternate days.
- Other Poses like Vasisthasana (Side Plank Pose), Virabhadrasana (Warrior Pose), and Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) can also be done to reduce aggravated Kapha D
