This is the story of Lord Krishna's victory over Naraksura - the demon who stole jewelry from Indra's heavenly mother Goddess, and usurped her territory, while kidnapping 16,000 women. Krishna flew on the back of Garuda, his heavenly vehicle, and before he slew, Naraksura the demon, Naraksura requested a boon from the Goddess. He asked that from then on, everyone should celebrate the death of the evil in him with colorful lights. Thus this day is known as 'Naraka Chaturdashi' – and is always celebrated on the day before Diwali.
