FAQs – Kajal
Q: 1. How is the Gulaab Khaas Kajal made?
- The traditional process of making the Gulaab Khaas Kajal is painstaking and delicate, with hundreds of pure Cotton wicks being soaked in a paste of Rose Petals, Almonds, Saffron, Nutmeg, Cashew Nut, Pistachios, Cardamom and, fresh herbs. These are also known as ‘Tarpaka’ herbs in Ayurveda, which are known to satiate the senses.
- These pre-saturated Cotton wicks are placed in earthen lamps or Diyas, filled with pure Cow’s Ghee. Then, silver plates or Thalis are placed above the lamps.
- This helps the lamp flame to cover the Thali with a deep black, natural soot, overnight. Finally, after 8-10 hours, a thick, rich black residue covers the silver plate.
- This natural soot is the base of our Ayurvedic kajal. Once the soot is collected, a small amount of pure Castor and Almond Oils with a few drops of Camphor, are mixed with the natural soot to achieve a paste-like consistency, which becomes the Gulaab Khaas Kajal.

Liquorice (Mulethi), Amlaki (Indian Gooseberry) and Karpura (Camphor) are also infused in the handmade Kajal for their antimicrobial properties. Bamboo Charcoal and Natural Carbon produced from pure Cotton wicks lend the Kajal its deep pigment and intense colour.

Mothers apply Kajal to their baby’s eyes to ward off evil, as a sign of protection. In Ayurvedic terms, Kajal is known as Anjanam or Eye Salve. The texts of Ayurveda explain that Pitta Dosha, the element of fire and light governs our eyes. Specifically, its sub-dosha “Alochaka Pitta” lives in the eyes.
